Genoa golf courses combined to improve bottom line

The recent purchase of the Sierra Nevada Golf Resort in Genoa by Mario Antoci from Chip Bowlby offers benefits to both buyer and seller, says Bowlby.

Antoci owns the nearby Genoa Lakes Golf Club, while Bowlby owns Monterey Development Group.

As the owner of MDA Enterprises Inc., Antoci will continue to manage the Genoa Lakes Golf Club in addition to the Sierra Nevada Golf Resort, which has been renamed Genoa Lakes Golf Resort.

Management of two golf courses, situated just five minutes apart, is a huge cost advantage for Antoci, says Bowlby.

"Plus," he says,"we're no longer competitors." Monterey Development, incorporated as MDG Nevada Inc., develops residential golf resorts in California and Nevada. When looking for incentives to offer potential buyers of 315 luxury home lots at the Genoa resort, Bowlby says membership in not one, but two golf courses is a plus.

"Being able to offer 36 not 18 holes is a huge benefit," he says.

As golf communities proliferate, they compete to offer a plethora of resort amenities pools, spas, tennis courts to add value to the luxury homes that overlook the greens.

"In all of our golf developments we try to combine purchase of a lot with membership in the golf club," Bowlby says, noting it's not a standard practice in the industry.

MDG Nevada is retaining the land zoned residential and tourist commercial.MDG also developed communities at Somersett and ArrowCreek in Reno.

The company markets locally in Douglas County, in the Reno area, at Lake Tahoe and in California."We use a lot of golf publications to sell both golf course memberships and homes," Bowlby says.

The Genoa Lakes Golf Resort is a 36-hole, par-72 championship course designed by Peter Jacobson, John Harbottle and Johnny Miller.
