Carson City

Exchange-student programs seek hosts

Academic Year in America has been awarded grants for the Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX) and the Partnership for Learning Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) for 2005. FLEX and YES provide an opportunity for international high school students from Eurasia, Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines to experience life in a democratic society to learn about volunteerism and free enterprise.

The FLEX Program is funded by Congress under the FREEDOM Support Act and administered by the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. FLEX participants are high school students, aged 15-17 who come from the countries of the former Soviet Union: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Also funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, YES provides full scholarships for a year or semester of living and studying in the United States to a select group aged 15-18 from Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines. Historical Society seeks yard sale coordinator

The Carson City Historical Society is seeking a volunteer to be its yard sale coordinator in October.

Current coordinator Paula Cannon will assist the person(s) taking over administrative duties. The position takes many hours of coordinating each event. The coordinator meets many people and oversees items brought to the Roberts House for sales. It includes one yard sale per month. Call Cannon at 887-8865.

Printmaking Workshop: Monotype - Art 425/625 will be offered for one credit from 4-10 p.m. June 17 and 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. June 18 at the University of Nevada, Reno's Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway.

The workshop focuses on monotype-monoprint techniques as an introduction to printing. Studio work in water-based, nontoxic inks, image-making, preparation of fine-art papers, press setup and printing, and curatorial aspects are included. No formal art experience is required. Internet and e-mail access are required. Preregistered students will be provided a brief materials list prior to class. The fee is $98 for one undergraduate credit; or $130.50, one graduate credit; plus $25 materials fee.
