Help raise money for local kids' sports; hear state's 'winningest' coach

Helaine Jesse is one of those people who is always on the run, but takes time out of her busy schedule to help others.

This year, she was the mentor for my son's Senior Project. I told Kyle, "If you're going to fund-raise, learn from the best in town - and that would be Helaine Jesse."

Wednesday, Helaine is again helping young men and women athletes by raising funds to continue the sports programs at Western Nevada Community College.

WNCC's annual Athletic Dinner presents, "Legends and Tales in Nevada Sports, An Evening with Coach Sellers" at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

I can't begin to tell you how important it is to give our students the opportunity to continue their education, plus pursue their athletic dreams locally.

Come help promote the WNCC Wildcats Athletic Department in raising funds for baseball, women's soccer and rodeo.

Purchase your tickets to enjoy a three-course dinner. The big bonus is the legendary tales from Nevada's all-time "winningest" coach, Joe Sellers.

S teve Hale of the U.S. Forest Service has a unique opportunity for high school students seeking outdoor adventures through its High Sierra Resource Workshop.

For the 13th consecutive year, 15- to 18-year-old students will receive eight days of hands-on instruction to gain a better understanding and appreciation for the natural world.

The scenes for their education will range from Bureau of Land Management's Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City to the heart of the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness.

Many school-age children need their immunization requirements prior to enrollment. Some requirements have changed in recent years, and the program is free Saturday.

Bring your child's immunization card and join Carson City Health and Human Services in their dedication to immunizing Northern Nevada.

For everyone who wants to stop and smell the roses, check out the free class at Greenhouse Garden Center - or call your mom and celebrate Mother's Day in the midst of roses.

The one-hour seminar "Growing Roses in Nevada" on May 7 will cover the best varieties for our wonderful Nevada climate: how to plant, prune, deal with the pests, watering and spraying. Thanks to the center's newly hired administrative assistant, Jean Bondiett, we will keep you updated on free seminars all year long.
