Fond memories of a prankster who delivered

Family stories are great and help carry families through tough times ... at Reid Hall's funeral last Saturday (he was the long time pharmacist at Gilbert's Drug Store), his son related the following tale ... seems when he and some friends were students at Utah State, they had an "iffy" relationship with Brigham Young University, so, as fraternity brothers are prone to do, they decided to play a prank and wrangle some chickens, pigs and a cow into the BYU boy's dorm under cover of night. When asked why they didn't let the livestock loose in the girl's dorm, they replied they couldn't tell the difference between the livestock and the BYU coeds ... mercy, mercy ...

Maizie remembers the first week she moved to Carson when one of her children was ill ... the doctor said she needed some medicine, but because her husband had taken the car to work in Reno, she didn't know how to get it. She looked in the phone book and found that Gilbert's had free delivery, so she called and told them what she needed, and why ... within 15 minutes, Reid Hall was at her door with the medication ... yes, the delivery was free and cheerful ... and it cost her only 98 cents.

From that day on, she was a customer of theirs until they closed in 1993. They carried almost everything ... toys, ice cream, presents, and, of course, medicine. Not only has Reid left fond memories, but also a terrific family to carry on his legacy (you've probably seen the musical Hall family in many WNCC productions) ... let's just hope the coeds forgive him in Heaven ...

No sooner do we get the flag back on C Hill, but vandals attack it ... if they're caught, why not make them whitewash the C, thus letting them do something positive for a change ...

Carolyn saw these and liked them ... "A lady worked for Meals On Wheels and often took her 4-year-old daughter with her. The little girl had gotten used to seeing canes, walkers, and wheelchairs, but one day came upon a set of dentures soaking in a glass. She looked at her mother and said, "The Tooth Fairy is never going to believe this ... "

"And a little boy was going through his family Bible, when he came across a leaf pressed between the pages. All excited, he called to his mother ... "I've found Adam's underwear."

Congratulations to the following: Target Stores for taking over-the-counter cold medicines off their shelves, so that kids have a harder time getting the ingredients for "meth" ... others should follow suit; John Smith, Review-Journal columnist (who is carried in the Appeal) for his heartwarming articles about his late mother and his 8-year- old daughter, Amelia, who is fighting cancer; Renaissance man, John Tyson, who retired last week after serving 43 years in the military; Pope Benedict XVI for taking on the tremendous challenges in the Catholic Church; and CJ Birch, for bringing the Confederacy alive to Marcie Richey's fifth grade class ... hummmm? Did you serve with Lee or Longstreet, CJ?

Nanci Adams, the new president of Natives and Newcomers, told us about the opening of the Silver Oak Golf Club this week ... they're serving breakfast and lunch (with sweet potato fries ... yummy ... and yeah, Kirk, we didn't make it without mentioning some kind of food in our column), and will be opening for dinner in June. Fresh flowers on the tables and a great view ...

"Little Johnny's kindergarten class was on a field trip to Sheriff Furlong's office where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of wanted criminals. When asked about the pictures, the Sheriff said they really wanted to catch them, so Little Johnny asked, "Why didn't you keep them when you took their pictures?" (Maizie contends that Carolyn made her use the sheriff's name ... HA)

And, "Little Johnny watched with fascination as his mother put cold cream all over her face ... 'Why do you do that, Mommy,' he asked ... 'To make myself beautiful,' she replied. She then began removing the cream with a tissue, and Little Johnny asked, 'Giving up?' " (Little Johnny is probably no longer with us ... )

But, speaking of "Johnnys" ... our friend, Johnny Johnston, from Leavenworth, Kan., has just found out his prostate cancer has spread to his bones ... he asks you all for prayers, so please, put him on your prayer lists, and hope he can conquer this dreadful disease ... believe us, he thanks you, as do we ...

Some of our "state lawns" are looking under mowed, under weeded, and under watered ... is it just too early to do these things, or are they "under funded?" Just wondering ...

Isn't it interesting that the debacle at the University of Nevada's Department of Agriculture is blamed on the professor who discovered it, instead of the hierarchy who said they knew nothing about it? Seems they've never heard of the phrase, "The buck stops here." Maybe Dean Thawley and President Lilley should do something positive about it, instead of trying to cover their "you know what's ... "
