Remember Pearl Harbor, and all who have served

Sixty-four years ago tomorrow Pearl Harbor was bombed, sending the United States into World War II ... may we all remember the debt we owe to the brave men and women who served our country then, and to those who are serving now.

A reader credits us with making the traffic situation at Roop and Winnie much better by mentioning it in our column. She thanked us, the sheriff's office and the drivers of Carson for making it clear as to which lane is which ... while we would like to take credit for that, we think that people have become more familiar with it and are more used to it. Ergo, fewer accidents. But, thanks anyway ...

Fred Cessna, of Temple City, Calif., wrote to tell us about the following ... he heard that "Sarah and Kurt Garrett (names have been added to expose the guilty) were in their living room, when Kurt said to her, "Just so you know ... I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug." So Sarah got up, unplugged the TV and threw out all his beer."

We haven't tried this, but on ABC the other day, they said you could go to www.paulenglish.com and find out how to get a "real person" on the phone, instead of those irritating recorded messages ... believe us, it's worth a try ... nothing's worse than listening to " ... push three if you need to speak to someone from Outer Mongolia ... "

We defy anyone who voted for Medicare, part D, to figure out what the "best plan" is for each person ... in pandering to the drug and insurance companies, Congress created a monster. To try and assist you ... make a list of all your prescription drugs, with name, dosage, and the drug company name ... then call 1-800-MEDICARE, and hope they can guide you to a successful conclusion. Good luck ...

Tacky as this is (therefore, we loved it), we heard that "just before the funeral service, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, "How old was your husband?"

"98," she replied, "two years older than me."

"So, you're 96," the undertaker commented.

She responded, "Hardly worth going home now, is it?"

Proud Grandma, Eloise (not quite ready for the "home") Koenig, tells us that the Sierra Flyers, Carson's youth and young adult running team, have qualified for the National Junior Olympics in Providence, R.I., and will be leaving for that event on Thursday ... her grandchildren Meagen Myer and Nick DiCianno have been to the NJO before, and are thrilled to be going again. Here's wishing the team great success ...

The Hug High Hawks had a great run at the state championship Saturday, but, unfortunately, came up on the short end of the stick against the Las Vegas Wildcats, 23-0. A 12-2 season is nothing to sneeze at, and, while we were hoping they'd win, it didn't happen ... so, there's always "next year" ...

Bill Saurer (782-0223) makes personalized business cards for every occasion ... albeit, some of them "monkey business" cards. He sent us some, two of which say, "Winter is the season in which people try to keep the house as warm as it was in the summer when they complained about the heat." And, our favorite (yeah, we're Democrats), "Weather report ... this is the first snow job in weeks that hasn't come from the White House." Awwwww ...

The Brewery Arts Center's BAC Stage Kids (call 883-1976 or 887-0438 for information) will present their annual fundraiser, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," (one of Carolyn's former "starring roles") on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m., the 17th at noon and 7 p.m., and lastly, the 18th at 2 p.m. It's a delightful Christmas comedy, and, while you don't have to pay to see it, they will be taking donations to help the BAC kid's programs ... so go and have a fun time ...

Santa will be at the Children's Museum on Saturday from 10-2 ... drop in and have your picture taken with him, or write him a letter ... admission is free to members, or $5 adults and $3 for children. It's always nice to tell you about people in our community ... "Colonel" Pete and Mary Cerquitella, Carson City auctioneers, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 26. They came from Pennsylvania to Carson 25 years ago (to get "out of the rain," Mary says), and have been going strong ever since.

You can go wish them well at one of their monthly auctions this Sunday in the exhibit hall at Fuji Park at 10 a.m. (883-0808 for information). Many more happy years ...

Observations: Patty and Peter Smith don't know if they'll be able to sleep with no midnight helicopter flights over their house, and 3 a.m. and ambulance sirens going by, since the hospital moved on Saturday ... tough it out, guys ... we know you'll adapt.

And Patty's dad, Bob Cooper, told Peter that the sure way to meet "nice ladies" is to go to Costco in the middle of the afternoon and chat with them there ... pretty darned suave, Mr. C ...

"Grams" Jesse is bragging about her grandson, Ryan Jesse ... as a CHS defensive back, he just made first team Sierra All-league team, second team NIAA 4A northern region, Sierra Media all-Northern honorable mention, CHS defensive back of the year and "most improved" on CHS defense ... yippee!

"I made myself a snowball as perfect as can be. I thought I'd keep it as a pet, and let it sleep with me. I made it some pajamas and a pillow for it's head. Then, last night, it ran away ... but first, it wet the bed." Anonymous ...
