Join the Kiwanians for lunch Jan. 26

The Carson City Kiwanis Club is having a Special Guest Day Jan. 26 at the Casino Fandango for a noon lunch.

Churches slate services for new year

At St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community on New Year's Eve, a 4 p.m. Mass will be held with confessions from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The church is at 3000 N. Lompa Lane. For information, call 882-1968.

At Unity Church of Today, Burning Bowl services will be New Year's Eve at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary and at the only service on New Years Day at 9 a.m. This Unity tradition invites the release of past troubles, to "Let go and let God." Mark calendar for Antique Show, Sale

The annual Genoa Antiques Show and Sale will be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 14 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 15 in the town hall in the center of Genoa.

Antiques featured will be country furniture, decorative arts, vintage textile, architectural antiques, heirloom jewelry and garden antiques. An appraisal clinic will be offered, and items will be appraised for a $5 per fee item. There is no limit to the number of items. Large items can be appraised through good photographs.

Reno

First appearance of Nevada Quarter at coin club meeting

The regular monthly meeting of the Reno Coin Club, a nonprofit organization, will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Elks Club across from the Reno Convention Center, 597 Kumle Lane.

Ken Hopple, master coiner, and his wife, Karen, will present the plans for the Jan. 31 presentation of the state quarter. The commemorative issues, first-day cover, commemorative coins and other details will be presented to the public for the first time.

Crash course in Italian in time for Olympics

The International Center is offering an Italian Conversation Course from Jan. 2-Feb. 1 for individuals who need to learn Italian quickly for their planned trip to the 2006 Olympics. The course will be held Mondays and Wednesdays for two hours each from 6-8 p.m. The course will be taught by an experienced linguist and will be at 821 N. Center St., Reno. Cost for the course is $140, including all materials.

Alpine County

Ideas sought for Alpine advisory committee projects

The Alpine County Resource Advisory Committee is soliciting project ideas. The RAC is charged with deciding how to spend the approximately $120,000 this year that have been allocated to Alpine County. The funds must be used to benefit the national forests in Alpine County, and can be used for projects on adjacent private or other agency land as long as the work helps the ecosystem or watershed of the forest.

Examples of past projects include hazardous-fuels reduction work near Grover Hot Springs State Park, funding the Alpine County Fire Safe Council coordinator, constructing bear boxes, improving water distribution in campgrounds and funding the construction of a pedestrian bridge over Silver Creek.
