Nevada lacks funds for AIDS patients

Nevadans with HIV or AIDS could languish on waiting lists for medication due to inadequate state funding, those who work with victims of the disease warn.

Gov. Kenny Guinn's proposed budget doesn't increase state funding for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program despite the state Health Division's requests for increases. The program almost ran out of money last year and had to seek emergency funds from a Clark County program to stay afloat, according to the state Health Division.

"As a person who takes care of these patients when they get sick in the hospital, I know that if you don't treat it, people get sicker," said Dr. Jerry Cade, director of HIV services at University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
