Virginia City teen hurt in Mound House accident

A Virginia City teen was injured Friday when her car collided with a vehicle that turned in front of her in heavy fog.

Stephanie Caughtry, 19, suffered a broken leg in the 8 a.m. accident on Highway 341 in front of the Chocolate Factory in Mound House, said Trooper Nick Nordyke.

According to Nordyke, Claudia Moreno-Contreras, 35, of Carson City, was northbound in a 2000 blue Chevy Blazer when she attempted to make a left turn onto Industrial Parkway.

Caughtry was southbound in a green 1994 Chevy Cavalier and struck Moreno-Contreras' vehicle "almost head-on," said Nordyke.

Both Caughty and Moreno were taken to Carson-Tahoe Hospital by ambulance. Nordyke said he believed Moreno's injuries were minor. Caughty suffered a compound fracture of her leg.

The wreck blocked the southbound lanes for about an hour, Nordyke said.

Moreno was cited for failure to yield left turn.
