Animal shelter collects tack for prison wild-horse program

The Lyon County Animal Shelter is accepting donations of tack for the Comstock Wild Horse Program at Warm Springs Correctional Center.

Animal Shelter Supervisor Ted Bolzle said donations of split reins, headstalls, new or used boots, snaffle bits, horse blankets and saddles will be accepted at the shelter office at 3705 Highway 50 in Silver Springs.

The Nevada Department of Corrections provides humane, gentling under the supervision of a trained professional to stray horses gathered by the Department of Agriculture. The program uses inmates to train up to 16 horses at a time, in 45-60 day cycles.

Most horses are working well under saddle and rider after completing the program. After completion of the training, the horses are available for adoption.

The Lyon County Animal Shelter is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and weekends from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. For information, call the shelter at 577-5005.
