SCORE sets entrepreneur seminar

SCORE isn't exactly getting all touchy-feely, but the Service Corps of Retired Executives is paying more attention to the psychological realities of owning a small business.

To be sure, the group's next seminar for people thinking of going into business for themselves includes the traditional subjects marketing, legal issues, financing and the like.

But unlike previous seminars sponsored by the group, the Feb.

26 session at the University of Nevada,Reno will devote more than 90 minutes to the effects that business ownership can have on the lives of the owners.

Jennifer Bushman,who leveraged her ownership of the Nothing To It! culinary school into a business that encompasses a deli, kitchen retail store, television appearances and cookbook publishing,will share her experiences in starting a business.

Gary Rosenbloom, a SCORE member who launched a technical staffing agency that ultimately posted $75 million in annual sales,will talk about the realities of business ownership.

Dick Hughs,who oversees the SCORE seminar series, said the new approach appears to be catching the attention of potential entrepreneurs.

The seminar, which is limited to about 55 participants, is filling more rapidly than earlier events.

The cost is $50, which includes the price of lunch and handout materials.) Hughs said participants in previous SCORE seminars requested a wider subject scope, covering more personal experiences.

Other speakers will include Dick Stumbo, a SCORE member who has developed financial planning software; attorney Bonnie Drinkwater; Chris Riche, a former marketing executive with Intuit; John Norton of the Small Business Administration and Robert Hart of Nevada State Bank.
