Reno

Application deadline for rodeo flag team tryouts is Monday

The Reno Rodeo Flag Team is an elite group of women with excellent riding ability and personality. These cowgirls are chosen through a nonpartial, unbiased tryout to represent the Reno Rodeo and its sponsors. The Reno Rodeo Flag Team is one of the largest flag teams in the nation, and it will need 75 members this year.

The deadline for filing applications is 5 p.m. Monday. For information call 329-3877, ext. 101, or www.renorodeo.com. Stop by the rodeo office at Gate 9 on the Livestock Event Center grounds for information.

Training for hospice volunteers is Monday

St. Mary's Hospice of Northern Nevada is seeking volunteers in Reno and Carson City. Hospice volunteers must complete a training program to learn how to become a resource to people who are ill and facing the end of their lives. Volunteer duties include providing companionship and doing simple tasks for patients. Volunteers do not provide medical care, but are an essential part of the team effort hospice offers in the care of patients and their families.

After successfully completing the training, hospice volunteers typically give four hours of their time each week.

The next training sessions is in Reno from noon-5 p.m. Mondays Feb. 28-April 4 at the St. Mary's Wellness Center, 745 West Moana Lane.

Volunteer opportunities are also available for individuals interested in providing bereavement support or assisting in the Hospice office. Carson City

Applications out for Community Council on Youth grants

The Community Council on Youth has released applications for Carson City Youth Service Program Grants. Projects must serve Carson City youth. Information meetings (bidders' conferences) will be at 10 a.m. and at 6:30 p.m.

Monday at the youth council offices, 625 Fairview Drive, Suite 120. Application deadline is March 10.

Arts lecture series continues Wednesday

"Nevada Neighbors," Capital City Arts Initiative's lecture series on contemporary art practice, celebrates its 10th event with "The Mountain Is Out," a lecture/presentation by distinguished Seattle Art Museum Curator Lisa Corrin.

The presentation will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Library. An informal reception at the library immediately precedes her talk, beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Corrin's talk will spotlight the extraordinarily diverse range of Northwestern artists and their work.

Admission is free.

Senior driver safety course begins Tuesday

An AARP Driver Safety Program class will be from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center. Attendance is required on both days for completion.

Attendees age 55 and over completing the course will receive a certificate entitling them to an auto insurance discount. Membership in AARP is not required. Preregistration is required, and there is a $10 fee.
