Lyon County to open office in Dayton

DAYTON - Lyon County will open a government substation in Dayton in late January to fulfill the demand of a growing region.

Donna H. Kristaponis, Lyon County manager, said Wednesday several county governmental services will be available in Dayton at the Occidental Square office at 801 Overland Loop, Suite 201.

It will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

Lyon County residents can obtain business and marriage licenses, pay their taxes or file for a building permit without driving to the county seat in Yerington.

"It's a good move for customer service and it's a good move for the county commission," Kristaponis said.

She'll be at the Dayton office about 30 percent of her time. Other departments will staff the office five days a week, such as the clerk/treasurer. Some offices, such as building, might only be staffed two days a week. Two district attorneys will also be located in that office.

Steven Hasson, Lyon County planning director, said all county service will emanate from Yerington, "but reality is we need to be able to provide services to the folks in Dayton, Mound House, Stagecoach and Silver Springs.

"The reality is that 75 percent of this county's current growth is in the Dayton area," Hasson said. "So, we need to be in the Dayton area so that we can provide adequate and prompt service to the Dayton-area development community."

A planner will be hired for full-time work in the Dayton office.

Developer Chris Bonafede, with the Hone Company, said the new office will make business in Dayton easier. He is developing the Dayton Delta LLC retail center around Smith's on Highway 50, which includes 25,000 square feet of retail space.

"This is our first project out here, but to not have to go to Yerington is going to be a tremendous help in making the process more efficient," he said.
