Reno tax preparer faces prison term

A Reno tax preparer has been sentenced to six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges that he aided in the preparation of a false federal income tax return.

Isidro Alejandrez, who owned Brother's Professional Tax Service, admitted that he prepared false tax returns for a Reno couple from 1997 through 2000.

Those returns included false claims for earned income credits, child tax credits and exemptions for dependents.

When an undercover agent with the Internal Revenue Service hired Alejandrez to prepare a tax return in March 2001, prosecutors said he falsely told the agent he could claim deductions for business expenses and dependents.

Alejandrez, who pleaded guilty in federal court in October to the charges, also was sentenced to a year of supervised release, must serve four months of home detention and pay a $2,000 fine.

The case was investigated by special agents with the IRS criminal investigation unit and prosecuted by Assistant U.S.

Attorney Brian Sullivan.
