Carson City

African drumming classes available

Liz Broscoe will teach West African Drumming Classes and Carson City Beginning Djembe Classes on July 16-27 at the Maytan Music Center in Carson Valley Plaza near Petco.

The four-week workshop will be held every Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.

There is an $80 fee up-front for the series of four classes. Drums are available or you may bring your own.

Preregistration is recommended and space is limited.

Participants will have the opportunity to continue on with additional ongoing drum classes upon completion of the workshop.

Broscoe has been a professional drummer for 25 years. She teaches West African rhythyms, Conga, and Drum Set at Lake Tahoe Community College and is the founder and director of the drum and dance troupe Java Djembe and co-founder of the band Raw Nature. She holds classes and team-building workshops in the Reno/Tahoe/Bay area.

Actors sought for musical production

The Brewery Arts Center announces auditions for its production of "The Last Five Years," a two-person musical by Tony Award winning Jason Robert Brown and directed by Christopher James. One couple recalls its relationship to song in music ranging from jazz to pop, from cabaret to rock. One excellent female singer/actor who appears in her late 20s is needed.

Auditions are at 2 p.m. July 16 in the BAC Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. Those auditioning will learn and sing "Still Hurting" from the show. The show will have four performances in October. Call 883-1976 for information.

Eagles to host picnic

The Carson City Fraternal Order of Eagles Picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16 at the Eagles Hall, 1380 E. Fifth St.

The afternoon includes games, free food to members and more.

Fashion show benefits wild-horse preservation

Men and Women for Wild Horse Freedom are holding a fashion show fund-raiser from noon-3 p.m. July 17 at the Gold Canyon Steakhouse Restaurant, 160 Main St., Dayton.

Cost is $25 per person and will include lunch and two fashion shows with men and women models.

The first fashion show is by Carson City Corral West Ranchwear, and the second is by "Weekends." After the show, entertainment will be by Rockin' Robin, Entertainer of the Year from Carnival Cruise Lines.

Buy tickets from noon-3 p.m. Saturdays this month at Corral West Ranchwear. No tickets will be sold the day of the event.

Self-help housing seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed for a nonprofit mutual self-help housing program in Dayton.

All building will be directed by construction supervisors.
