Looking for Private Pleasures®? Reno IP auction house can help

Joseph Popolo began auctioning Private Pleasures this week but the pleasures are purely intellectual property.

Popolo's Reno-based company, ipAuctions Inc., is launching an online auction of the "Private Pleasures" worldwide trademarks.

The trademarks have been owned by Warnaco, a New York-based maker of intimate apparel and sportswear.A company spokesman didn't return a call to explain why the trademarks are for sale.

Popolo said last week he expects extensive interest in the auction, which includes 121 trademarks and Internet domain names.

Included is trademark protection of the name in countries ranging from Afghanistan to Yemen.

"This is a unique, one-of-a-kind online sale of trademarks for a world-class brand name," he said, noting that Private Pleasures has been used as a trademark for bras, pants, slips and sleepwear.

All the trademarks and domain names will be auctioned as a single lot.

IpAuctions' full-time staff of two is advertising the auction via e-mail and direct mail to a database of about 5,000 lawyers and other specialists in intellectual property.

Much of the company's work involves intellectual property owned by bankrupt corporations, although ipAuctions has seen an increased flow of work from corporations looking to streamline their holdings of patents, trademarks and other intellectual property.

That takes ipAuctions into a wide variety of work.

One recent auction, for instance, put up to bid a patent on a system to remove ticks and similar parasites from host animals.

Before that, ipAuctions was selling a patent for a prefabricated steel modular parking garage.
