Carson City

Survey deadline for master plan is Friday

Simple survey available at the Carson City Library and online at www.carsoncitymasterplan.com allows Carson City residents to voice their opinions regarding the master planning process.

A comprehensive layout of Alternative Land Use Scenario Comparisons, developed by the Carson City Planning Department as a detailed guide to the three different choices under consideration, is available along with the survey. The Carson City Library and City Hall are two central locations where the comparison guide and survey can be obtained through Friday. Longtime residents and newcomers are encouraged to express their thoughts of how they "Envision Carson City." This survey provides a vehicle to educate the public of the three scenarios.

Scenario 1 is Compact Growth; Scenario 2 is Mixed-Use Activity Centers; Scenario 3 is Urban Expansion. Key Features for Growth Patterns, Parks and Recreation, Business and Employment, Housing and Neighborhoods, Fiscal and Economic Implications, and Retail Strategies are outlined in the comparison guide. Participants in the survey will provide feedback on preferred scenarios for the future of the Downtown area, North and South Carson Street, Highway 50 East, the Central Freeway area, BLM lands, and the Eastern Portal. In addition, space for public comment is available at the conclusion of each survey.

Highway 50 Wagon Train coming this way

The Highway 50 Association will bring the 56th Wagon Train on Saturday and Sunday. They will rendezvous Friday at Fuji Park.

The wagon train will leave Carson City Saturday and arrive in Placerville, Calif., June 25.

Sign up now for AARP driver safety class

An AARP Driver Safety program class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p. m. Saturday at Carson City Fire Station No. 1, 777 S. Stewart St.

Participants will receive valuable information on compensating for the effects of aging on driving, and a review of the rules of the road. Students age 55-older with good driving records become eligible for auto insurance discounts upon completion of the class. There is a $10 fee. To register, call 786-3509.

Taste of Downtown Carson City features 27 restaurants

Downtown Carson City will hold its 12th annual Taste of Downtown fund-raiser, offering samplings from the best of 27 area restaurants from 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday.

An expected 1,700 ticket holders will stroll along the Capital City's main thoroughfare, Carson and Curry Streets, through bistros and restaurants accompanied by the sounds of live musicians.

The charity event raises nearly $30,000 for Advocates to End Domestic Violence, a Carson City-based nonprofit organization that operates Northern Nevada's largest shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Tickets are on sale now for $30 at Sugar Pine Cove Gift Shop, 1087 S. Carson St., Classy Seconds Thrift Store, 411 Hot Springs Road, and the Advocates' office. For information, call the agency at 883-7654.

Sign up now for senior computer class

The next "Introduction to Computers" classes begin June 20, twice a week for four weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9-11 a.m.

A second class will begin June 21, twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1-3 p.m. Class fee is $40 per person.

Each class is limited to seven students and is first-come, first-served. Pre-enrollment will close Wednesday.

Virginia City

World premiere set for Friday at Piper's

What has a jazz big band, a women's chorus, five historic buildings, and a talented, energetic New York composer?

"Building from the Past," music for women's chorus and jazz band by Lisa DeSpain, will hold its world premiere at 8 p.m. Friday at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City.

Tickets are $15 general admission; $8 seniors and students; and $25 for a family pass (up to two adults and four children). Tickets are available in advance at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City, online at ActivityTickets.com, and at the door.
