Concert, brick-breaking benefit boy's cancer fight

A benefit concert and world-record brick-breaking attempt from 1-5 p.m. featuring Wicker Box and Cheaters bands will be held Saturday at Nevada Fitness, 829 Fairview Drive.

The benefit is for Daniel Morrison, a young boy with cancer.

The brick breaking features Dan Horrigan attempting to break 600 bricks in 60 seconds at 3 p.m., a poker run at 9 a.m. beginning at Carson-Tahoe Harley-Davidson, $30 entry; Straight Blast Gym Cage Fighters and more; and an 8 p.m. concert with Wicker Box at T's Tavern, 3679 S. Wings of Change dance for teens at airport

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will sponsor Wings of Change Teen Dance for grades 6-9 from 7-10 p.m. Saturday at the Douglas County Airport.

In addition to the dance with DJ "The Ant Man," there will be flight simulation and aviation information.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Students must arrange their own transportation ahead of time and need to be picked up promptly at 10 p.m.

Cost is $5 at the door.

Lake Tahoe

Birding trip set for North Tahoe area, Tahoe City

Lahontan Audubon Society is sponsoring a daylong, small-group birding trip to the North Lake Tahoe area beginning at 8 a.m. sharp Saturday in Tahoe City.

The trip is of moderate difficulty with occasional rough trails.

Possible bird species include high Sierra specialties such as blue grouse, pine grosbeak, black-backed woodpecker, sapsuckers, Western tanager, lazuli bunting and many warbler species. Outstanding wildflower displays are also expected.

Bring a bag lunch and plan to bird until mid-afternoon.

Scholarships available for ElderCollege classes

ElderCollege, a member-directed learning-in-retirement organization sponsored by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, announces the Helaine Greenberg ElderCollege Fund, a new scholarship opportunity for Nevada residents 55 and older interested in lifelong learning.

Scholarship recipients receive a one-year membership to ElderCollege (a $45 value), which allows them to access dozens of free programs, lectures and classes offered by ElderCollege, as well as other benefits of membership.

To be considered for the scholarship, seniors must submit a written scholarship request letter describing their financial need.
