Sunday Column: student wins speech contest

A correction recently appeared in a church bulletin reading:

"Some of you will be disappointed to learn that last week's bulletin mentioning of a 'sex week session of healing' was a typo - probably due to a defective keyboard or an electrical spike, and not the wandering mind of the parish secretary. We regret the error."

How many chances do you get to run with the family? An actual run. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada presents that exact opportunity the early morning of April 9. The cost is $10 for children 12 and under. The registration is $25 and over for those over 12 and $30 after March 26.

For more information, call the museum at 884-2226. Race sign-in is 8 a.m., the day off with the 2-mile walk, 2-mile run or 10K beginning at 9 a.m. at the Pinion Plaza Resort Casino. Participants will receive a T-shirt. Registration forms can be picked up at the Children's Museum.

Sarah Stadler, a student at Carson High school, won the Sunset Rotary Club of Carson City's speech contest March 3 and is scheduled to compete at the district Rotary Area 9 Speech Contest on April 26 in Minden.

She will compete against other top winners coming from Tahoe Douglas Rotary, South Lake Tahoe Rotary, Minden Rotary and Carson City Noon Rotary.

Four students participated in the Sunset Rotary competition, including Stadler, Nicole Corlerato, who won second, Kacie Collier, who took third, and Emily Wang, who took fourth. All four Carson High School students are taking public speaking courses and received checks as awards.

"My name is Alfredo. I am 10 years old and in fifth grade. I live in Mount Vernon, Wash. I am doing a report on your state because I thought Nevada would be a cool and interesting state. A state report is when we write letters to states asking for what we want from you for the state we pick. I would like an autographed picture of the governor, a mini flag of Nevada, and a small snow globe of Las Vegas.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read my letter and have a happy New Year. Sincerely, Alfredo"
