Arizona-based fast casual chain plans five locations in Reno area

Kokopelli Mexican Grill, a Phoenix-based chain of fast-casual restaurants, is preparing an entry into the Reno market.

The company said it inked an area development agreement for Nevada that calls for five franchised restaurants in Reno.

The chain's restaurants serve a Southwestern menu, and differentiate themselves from competitors by the use of handblended Sonoran spices, steamed-to-order tortillas and slow-cooked beans that aren't refried.

Bob Clasby, who oversees franchise sales for Kokopelli Mexican Grill Franchise Co., says the company typically looks for 2,400-squarefoot shopping center locations surrounded by residential and business neighborhoods.

He said franchisees prefer locations on the end of a shopping center and want outdoor seating areas.

The restaurants seat 65 to 85 indoors and 30 on their patios.

Kokopelli's information for potential franchisees says total capital investment in one of its restaurants runs between $305,000 and $450,000.

Franchisees need a minimum net worth of $750,000.

The first Kokopelli restaurant was launched by a Phoenix couple in 1997, and the company now operates two locations in the Arizona city.

As the result of a franchise program launched six months ago, Kokopelli currently has 40 locations under development, Clasby says.
