Soroptimists continues April Fools' with Comedy Night benefit on April 16

The Easter Shoe Program has one more week, and I can't thank everyone enough for the tremendous support in gathering enough shoes for needy children.

I walked into the Pizza King up in Mound House last weekend, and Maria handed me money to purchase shoes.

When they ran Nick's Pizza downtown, owners Maria and George Metropoulas supported community events and continue to do so in Mound House. Thanks, Maria and George - three students at Empire are very grateful.

If you didn't get all your laughs and pranks out on April 1, Soroptimist International has a night filled with laughter and gags.

Comedians performing April 16 are Grace White, aka "Old Hippie Chick," and Alberto Vallejo at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall.

Enjoy complimentary champagne and chocolates. The event provides money for scholarships and children's charities throughout Carson City.

Don't forget to get your children involved in the 14th annual Fred Alexander Memorial at Empire Ranch Golf Course April 24.

Children can learn the great game of golf for free. Local instructors donate their time, and golf clubs are handed out to those who do not have equipment.

Speaking of sports, "Let's go, Wildcats!" Doesn't that sound good?

Western Nevada Community College is starting fund-raising for its sports, which include the rodeo team and adding men's baseball and women's soccer.

The second annual Athletic Dinner is April 27. Last year's event sold out with guest speaker Steve Garvey, and this year's speaker is a Nevada legend, Coach Joe Sellers.

Sellers was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in 2003, based on his outstanding career at Wooster High School. He led the Colts to seven state football championships and compiled the winningest record in Nevada football history, winning more than 83 percent of his games over his career and has an overall record of 250 wins against just 45 loses.

Hear him speak about "The Tales and Legends of Nevada Athletics" and support WNCC's efforts to get sports programs off the ground.
