Hawthorne recommended for closure by Pentagon

Recommendations released by the Pentagon today include the closure of the Hawthorne Ammunition Depot, realignment of the Naval Air Station Fallon and of the Reno-Tahoe International Air Guard Station and expansion of Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas.

In addition to Hawthorne 32 other bases are slated for closure, 29 are recommended for realignment.

Several steps remain before the recommendations become final.

Including:

• Sept. 8: The Base Closure and Realignment commission must forward its report on the recommendations to the president.

• Sept. 23: The president will has to accept or reject the recommendations in their entirety.

• If accepted, Congress will have 45 legislative days to reject the recommendations in their entirety or they become binding on the department.
