More than a dozen groups have signed on for Wednesday's Health Faire hosted by Lyon County Senior Services.
The fair for seniors is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fernley Senior Center.
In a different approach, senior services is offering information from nonprofit organizations which have services available at little or no cost to the elderly.
"We didn't just want to bring in businesses to sell their wares. We wanted this to be for seniors at no or little cost to them," said Sara Brower, senior services program manager.
Brower said they have 15 vendors lined up including High Desert Hospice, Nevada Legacy Corps, RSVP and its Home Companion Program, Carson-Tahoe Cancer Resource Center, CareChest and demonstrations of Resistance Exercise.
"We also have the Foster Grandparent Program, Reno New Beginnings, which is a support group for widows and widowers who have moved on from the grieving stage and are ready to get on with their lives socially and recreationally.
"The Alzheimer's Association of Northern Nevada will be here along with USDA World Development, which is a low-income housing and self-help housing program; The Continuum, which offers help for the senior disabled, and the Chips program."
The center is at 1170 W. Newlands Drive in Fernley.
Both Dayton and Silver Springs senior centers will offer a ride in their vans to and from the health faire for those needing transportation.
For riders in Dayton call Kelley Crossman at 246-6210, and for those in the Silver Springs area call Bobbie Hughes at 577-5014.
"This year's theme is 'Get Moving ... It's a Step in the Right Direction,'" said Brower. "It's a senior health and fitness fair.
"We will also be serving lunch, at a $2 suggested donation, of turkey sandwiches, pasta salad, cranberry sauce and fresh fruit and cookies."
