Teen arrested in Goni shooting

A 15-year-old Carson City boy arrested Wednesday may be charged as an adult in an early morning shooting on Goni Road.

Jesus Garcia, 17, was in stable condition Wednesday afternoon from a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest.

Investigators say Garcia and the unnamed 15-year-old exchanged words at Carson High School and allegedly agreed to meet at a remote portion of Goni Road to "fight," sometime before 8:30 a.m.

"As the two individuals confronted each other, the suspect pulled a small-caliber gun from his waistband and shot the victim one time in the chest," said Sgt. Bob White.

The suspected shooter, along with a 16-year-old friend, allegedly fled the scene. Garcia drove himself to Carson-Tahoe Hospital, where he was taken by helicopter to Washoe Medical Center.

White said the victim didn't know the suspect's name, but with the assistance of Carson High School administration investigators were able to identify him.

Within three hours of the shooting, Detective Dena Lacy arrested the 15-year-old on suspicion of attempted murder as he walked to a classroom at Pioneer High School. She later located at a home on Tiger Drive a .22-caliber pistol believed to have been used in the shooting.

The 16-year-old companion was also arrested at Pioneer High School on suspicion of accessory to attempted murder.

Both juveniles were booked into the Carson City Jail.

According to Nevada law, murder or attempted murder are not considered delinquent acts and do not fall under the jurisdiction of juvenile courts. The alleged shooter's name is being withheld because he is a juvenile. His name will be released if he is charged as an adult.

District Attorney Noel Waters said the alleged conspirator's case will probably remain in the juvenile courts.
