Give thanks to veterans today at Lone Mountain Cemetery celebration

A heartfelt thank you to every veteran who dedicated his or her life for our freedom. I have two uncles who fought in the Vietnam War. and my sincerest thank you goes to them and every man and woman who has fought for our country in each war we have been involved in.

Today is the day we remember the fallen heroes who died in service of our great country, but please remember to also say thank you and a special prayer to those men and women on the front lines; they also need our continued support.

At Lone Mountain Cemetery, the memorial program includes a color guard, honor guard, the U.S. Navy Sea Cadets singing the National Anthem and guest speaker Beth Watson from Women Army Corps, Chapter 108.

This Kiwanis event gives a big financial boost for the Carson City Library each year.

The funds raised go to help the summer reading program by purchasing books and other needed materials. With available funding becoming increasingly slim, every penny counts.

So come down and enjoy pancakes hot off the griddle at "Pancake Breakfast for Books," sponsored by our local Kiwanis. Slot World donates the sausages. Tom Ovary at Slot World said he likes supporting this event because it helps so many individuals who enjoy the Carson City Library during the summer.

Speaking of pennies, here is a challenge to our community. I know regular readers have seen the ads with Nevada Appeal photographer Rick Gunn standing next to Jim Parry, former superintendent of the Carson City School District.

Jim's new position is executive director of Make-a-Wish Foundation. I miss him daily, but am thankful the Make-a-Wish hired such an outstanding man.

Gunn will ride his bicycle around the world to raise awareness on the struggles for children worldwide and help the terminally ill children in Northern Nevada.

Rick and Jim want to grant each child his or her personal wish. I challenge our whole community to stand by both these amazing men and their heartfelt pledge to help children.

How many dreams can we achieve? It's easy, Put penny jars everywhere, by the cash registers, in the classrooms, at all of our churches.
