Harold W. 'Hal' Furman

Harold W. "Hal" Furman, 97, a Carson City resident for the past 32 years, died May 26, 2005, at Evergreen Convalescent Hospital. He was born Aug. 23, 1907, in Salinas, Calif., to Fred Furman.

He married Virginia Pozzi in 1952. She preceded him in death in 2001.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle, New York, Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

He graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1925. He played on both the varsity football and baseball teams at the University of California, Berkeley and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1929.

Mr. Furman had a long career with United Airlines, starting in the early 1940s as a ticket agent in Chicago and retiring as senior vice president of sales and service in 1973.

He was drafted by the Philadelphia Athletics pro baseball team, but chose a career in business rather than professional baseball.

Among his survivors are his son and daughter-in-law, Hal and Sally Furman of Washington, D.C., and La Jolla, Calif.; and granddaughter, Elizabeth of Alexandria, Va.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
