Donations sought to aid kids' Christmas

Angel Tree and Toys for Tots, part of a Central Lyon County Parks and Recreation effort, are collecting unwrapped toys or gifts for infants through teenagers for Christmas.

Barrels in which to place the gifts are located in Dayton at the library, Pizza Factory, UPS Store, Subway, Allstate Insurance, Smith's, Winners Corner, Port of Subs and the Dayton Depot.

In Stagecoach, the barrel is at the Stagecoach GID office.

In Silver Springs, the barrels are at Piper's Casino and Restaurant, Pizza Factory, Realty World, Silver Springs Auto Parts, Silver Springs Water Department, the U.S. post office and Village Market.

In Mound House, the barrel is at Handjive.

In Fernley, barrels are at Bank of America, Pizza Factory, Nevada State Bank, Silverado Casino, Wells Fargo Bank, Fernley City Hall, Scolari's Market, L&L Realty, the Fernley Senior Center, Wigwam Restaurant and the Fernley Volunteer Fire Department.

To sign up for help with gifts, call the Parks and Recreation office at 246-6227 in the Dayton or Mound House areas; Human Services at 577-5009 for the Silver Springs and Stagecoach areas; and in Fernley, pick up an application at the Fernley Chamber of Commerce.

Parks and Recreation will also accept financial donations and do the shopping for any donor who isn't able to shop for a toy or gift. Contact Parks and Recreation at 246-6227.

Real estate firm to hold fundraiser

A fundraising party will be held at from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Shadow Mountain Real Estate office, 655 Highway 50 E., No. 2, in Dayton, to purchase Christmas gifts for needy children.

Raffle tickets for more than 50 gifts can be purchased at the office. Proceeds will be turned over to the Dayton schools to be distributed to needy children. Call 246-4090.

Boy Scout troop sells holiday trees

Christmas trees can be purchased from Boy Scout Troop 100's Christmas tree lot at the Community Roots nonprofit plant nursery on the corner of Highway 50 and Second Avenue in Dayton from 5-8 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The troop, led by John Alexander and Scoutmaster Dan South, recently trekked Mount Rose to bring Christmas trees back to Dayton.

The sale raises funds for Boy Scout programs throughout the year.

The noble fir trees are 5 feet or higher and cost from $10 to $25. Call 241-0575.

Cans and Coats drive planned for Saturday

A Winter Cans and Coats drive will be held at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Canned goods and coats can be dropped off at the center from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The drive, sponsored by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties will provide food and coats for the needy. Call 246-7550.

Virginia City

Parade of Lights set for Saturday

Floats, marching groups and equestrians will be decorated for the holiday at the annual Christmas on the Comstock Parade of Lights Saturday down C Street.

The parade, the kickoff to Virginia City's annual month-long Christmas on the Comstock festival, will feature Beauregard, the car-driving dog; the Sierra Pacific Hot Stix drill team; many floats lit up for the season and Santa Claus.

The parade will begin at 5 p.m., with entry registration at 4 p.m. and lineup at 4:30 p.m.

Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the best entries. Entry fee is $10, to cover the cost of ribbons. Fees must be received at registration. Late entries are welcome.

Other Christmas on the Comstock events include the annual Christmas tree shopping game, and a drawing to win $1,000 in Virginia City Merchant Money.

'Nutcracker' performed at Piper's

Carolyn Oliver and the Nevada Ballet Society present "The Nutcracker" at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City.

This is an adaptation of "The Nutcracker" featuring young ballet students for the whole family. Seats sell fast, so buy tickets early.

Victorian Christmas at Fourth Ward

After the Parade of Lights on Saturday, visitors can stop in the Historic Fourth Ward School at 627 South C St. for the Victorian Christmas celebration from 6-8 p.m. Visitors can have a cup of cheer, appetizers and the chance to shop in the unique museum gift store.

All merchandise is discounted 20 percent, and members receive an additional 20 percent discount.

The school is decorated with a giant fir tree in the E.L. Wiegand Great Hall. Call 847-0975.

Book and gift basket sale Saturday

A sale of large gift baskets with many themes is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Storey County Senior Center, E and Mill streets.

The proceeds will benefit Silver City community events.

Baskets are filled with children's books and toys, cookbooks, kitchen gadgets, classic literature, teas, antiquarian books and gourmet coffees. Call 847-0957.

Comstock Cowboys holiday show Dec. 9

"Christmas in the Sierra," the original Christmas show written and performed by David John and the Comstock Cowboys, will be performed in a dinner show on Dec. 9 at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City.

A barbecue dinner will be served at 6 p.m., followed by the show at 7.

The show features a Western Christmas, filled with traditional carols and holiday-themed Western songs.

Tickets for dinner and show are $35 for adults; $15 for seniors and children under 8.

An economical family package covering two adults and two children or seniors is $70. Tickets without the meal are $25 for all ages.
