According to a press release by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), individuals and groups who are interested in conducting projects that will benefit Nevada's wildlife and wildlife habitats can apply for Wildlife Heritage Trust Account grants that are available through the Dept. of Wildlife.
Money for the account is derived from the sale of Wildlife Heritage and Partnership in Wildlife big game hunting tags.
These are premium tags that hunters purchase at sportsman organization auctions and through a special drawing that is held in conjunction with the annual big game tag drawing.
In previous years, only the interest that was derived from the account could be spent on projects.
But legislation passed during the last legislative session allows up to 75 percent of the funds received each year along with the interest to be used for wildlife enhancement projects.
Currently there is more than $4.5 million in the account and this year it received $592,000 from tags sales and donations and nearly $90,000 in interest.
Recent projects include NDOW's big and small game trapping and transplant programs, water development (guzzler) construction and range restoration and re-seeding.
Project applications will be accepted through March 1, 2006 for projects that should be conducted between July 1, 2005 and June 30, 2007.
Applications are available at NDOW offices and online at www.ndow.org.
