Myrtie Lew Sawyer

A memorial service for Myrtie Lew Sawyer, 63, a Utah resident, will be at noon Saturday at the Valley View Funeral Home Chapel, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah.

Mrs. Sawyer died Sept. 30, 2005, while hiking in the canyons of Price, Utah.

She was born Sept. 28, 1942, in Blackwell, Okla., to Elmer and Virginialea Sawyer.

She attended schools in Albuquerque, N.M. and graduated from Highland High. She attended John Brown University, where she received a bachelor of science degree in biology and a minor in English.

After graduating, she moved to Carson City, where she taught biology at Carson High School. She also taught science and math at St. Teresa's for several years.

She married John Horgan. They divorced in 1980.

She obtained a master's degree in education from the University of Nevada, Reno and a second master's in school counseling at the University of Utah.

She was a counselor with the Granite School District at Valley Junior High School for 17 years.

Mrs. Sawyer was an avid reader. She enjoyed traveling, bowling, movies, University of Utah games, nature and collecting scrapbooking paper and stamps.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Mary and stepfather, J.D. Wallace.

Among her survivors are her daughter and son-in-law Anne and Rex Pico and their children Matthew, Shanna, Jessica, Charity, Andrew and Sarah; aunt, Olive Richardson of Albuquerque; and adopted family Char Packard and Mike, Jake, Erin, Phill, Adri and Corby.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Horgan Memorial Scholarship Fund at Cochise College, 4190 W. Highway 80, Douglas, AZ 85607-9724.
