Learning Channel seeks someone to live in religious retreat

The Learning Channel is making two documentary series and looking for men to live in a monastery and women to live in a convent for six weeks. Participants will be asked to conduct their own search for meaning and understanding. You do not need to have a religious background, but you should be willing to engage in the process.You will be paid.

City seeks applicants for Shade Tree Council

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Shade Tree Council.

There are four volunteer openings to be filled. The Shade Tree Council provides advice on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and promotion of a safe, healthy and attractive urban forest in Carson City.

Terms for these vacancies expire January 2009. Applicants should be aware that a minimum commitment of up to 10 hours a month is expected.

All members will serve without compensation.

The council will make its recommendations of qualified residents to the board who will appoint members to the board. Applicants must be Carson City residents and registered voters.

Volunteer applications may be obtained from and returned to the Carson City Executive Offices by Nov. 11. All applications submitted will be considered public information.

Majesty performs Friday at Silver Hills

Majesty, a 10-member vocal ensemble, will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at Silver Hills Community Church, 1066 Mallory Way.

The group will present music and testimony appealing to all ages. Their music includes selections highlighted from their albums.

Majesty is comprised of full-time students at The Master's College in Santa Clarita, Calif., and travels throughout the West Coast during the school year.

Flu shots available, beginning Friday

Flu shots will be available to high-risk individuals from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. beginning Friday at the Carson Mall; 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Minden Medical Center, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 14 at Dayton Medical Center and noon-4 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Carson Mall.

Carson Democratic Women meet

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant.

Guest speaker is Ellen Hopkins, publisher of the Three Leaping Frogs.
