Carson City

Reserve a seat now for GOP women's lunch

The Carson City Republican Women will be hosting their October Luncheon on Oct. 18, at the Carson Nugget, second Floor. Social time begins at 11 a.m., followed by the buffet lunch at 11:30. Guest speaker is Steve Martin, treasurer for the Nevada Republican party. Members and guests are welcome, cost of luncheon is $17. Call 841-3553 to make reservations by Oct. 15.

Bring items to the luncheon to support the Advocates to End Domestic Violence. As always, toiletries and personal items are needed along with a special request for new or gently used Halloween costumes for the kids at the Advocates' Shelter.

The group has also collected more than 300 children's books that will be distributed to the Advocates, Fritsch, Empire and Bordewich-Bray elementary schools, and the Carson-Tahoe Hospital pediatric unit.

Register now for AARP driver program

An AARP Driver Safety Program class will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Carson City Fire Station on South Stewart Street.

Participants will receive valuable information on compensating for the effects of aging on driving and a review of the rules of the road. Students 55 and older with good driving records will become eligible for auto insurance discounts upon completion of the class.

There is a $10 per person fee.

Bingo Night to benefit Katrina victims

The Carson Valley Knights of Columbus council will donate proceeds of Friday's bingo night to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Net proceeds for that evening will be donated to Knights of Columbus national Katrina Relief effort.

The national Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has pledged $2.5 million for Hurricane Katrina Relief. It has also challenged its more than 12,000 local units to meet or exceed that commitment by contributing to the Katrina Relief Fund of the Knights of Columbus Charities.

If the grassroots level donates more than $2.5 million to that fund by Nov. 1, the Supreme Council will match the amount in excess of $2.5 million.

Dick Clark, grand knight of the local council, hopes to double the normal attendance for this special evening. Doors open at 6 p.m. games begin at 7 p.m. in the Saint Gall Pastoral Center, 1343 Centerville Lane, in Gardnerville. Players can purchase a $20 game pack that includes a three-card warm-up, 10 games, and one progressive blackout game.

For this event, the progressive blackout game will pay $800 if a bingo is reached within a specific number of calls. A second pack can be purchased for $5. Call 265-6132.

DAWG hosting adoption event at shelter

National Adopt-A-Shelter-Pet month will be recognized with a special adoption event at the Douglas County Animal shelter, 921 Pinenut Road, Gardnerville from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

The event sponsored by the Douglas Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) will offer free spay and neuter for most adult dogs and cats, and free obedience training for dogs adopted at the event.

The 26 kennels at the shelter house one-of-a-kind, medium to large dogs needing new homes.
