Moment of Drums tonight at homecoming game

Communities across the nation this October will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Mothers Against Drunk Driving through the Moment of Drums, a national event held locally through the Carson City School District. During the Carson High School Homecoming football game tonight, the Blue Thunder Marching band will pause between the third and fourth quarters, approximately 8:45-9 p.m., to play a short cadence signifying the Moment of Drums.

Since MADD's inception, alcohol related fatalities have declined 44 percent, according to the group. The Moment of Drums is a tribute to symbolize the heartbeat of more than 300,000 people who might be alive today because of MADD and other healthy and safety groups.

Each year nearly 17,000 people are killed and about half a million injured due to alcohol-related traffic crashes. Another 6,000 die due to underage drinking. MADD was established in 1980 and has more than 2 million members and supporters.

Building awareness, taking action at CHS

Carson High School students are putting together a Community Awareness Fair focusing on driver awareness as well as drug prevention on Oct. 22. There will be games and interactive activities throughout the day, free food and drinks, a Battle of the Bands and a Run for Safer Choices (laps around the track). There are games for youth and adults.

The jog/run is from 8-10 a.m., and the battle of the bands is from noon-3 p.m. Bring the family. For information, call Brian Reedy at CHS at 283-1652.

Three meetings coming up for Carson fire safe councils

Several Carson City chapters of the Nevada Fire Safe Council were formed this summer, with the assistance of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and another one is in the works.

Residents of North Carson City are meeting at 6 p.m., Nov. 8 at the Carson City Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management, 5665 Morgan Mill Road, to continue their plans to form a local chapter. The meeting is open to the public, and sponsored by BLM, the Carson City Fire Department, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

Two other established Carson City chapters of the Nevada Fire Safe Council have also set upcoming meetings and agendas, which are also open to the public:

• The Mexican Dam/Pinion Hills Chapter will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the BLM Field Office. The group will discuss proposed projects, including installing a water tank in Mexican Dam to provide additional water storage, and reducing fuels on the west side of Piñon Hills.

• The Lakeview Chapter will meet at 6 p.m., Oct. 26, at the Carson City Fire Station No. 1, 777 S. Stewart St. The group will discuss a proposed project to create a fuel break along the southeast portion of the neighborhood, as well as other possible fuel removal projects. In addition, Norb Szczurek from the North Tahoe Fire Department will discuss his experiences fighting the Waterfall fire in the Lakeview community.

Young at Heart's monthly bingo set for Sunday

Young at Heart's monthly bingo at the senior center in Gardnerville will be Sunday. Doors open at noon. Early-bird games start at l p.m., and regular games at 1:30 p.m. Must be 21 years or older to participate.

Free coffee and snacks are available. Hot dogs and chili may be purchased at the Snack Bar.
