Safe Halloween party at United Blood Services

Halloween should be a safe experience for children and United Blood Services wants to help.From 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Oct. 31, United Blood Services will host its annual Safe Halloween Party with arts and crafts, treats, a costume contest and a fishing pond.

United Blood Services welcomes little ghosts and goblins. The Reno Psychic Institute will present psychic readings exclusively for donors from noon-3 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 31

The center will remain open until 7 p.m. Tuesday. Pizza will be served to donors from 4-7 p.m. The Carson City center is at 256 E. Winnie Lane in the Crossroads Shopping Center. For further information or to schedule an appointment, call 887-9111.

Haunted Gardnerville Ghost Walk Thursday

The "Haunted Gardnerville Ghost Walk" to be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Meet at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center. The cost is $5 per person. The program will begin with a walking tour of haunted sites in Gardnerville. After the walking tour, participants will return to the Museum and Cultural Center for a discussion about murders, suicides and other haunted sites in Carson Valley.

Hot cider and cookies will be served. Bring a flashlight, dress warmly, and wear warm walking shoes. For information, call 782-2893 or 782-2555.

Democrats to discuss Northern Nevada's disaster preparedness

Northern Nevada and the Carson Valley's disaster preparedness will be discussed at 7 p.m. Thursday in the old Choir Room at Douglas High School in Minden.

Open to all local residents, the program is sponsored by Douglas County Democratic Women as part of its ongoing effort to provide nonpartisan information on issues of concern to Carson Valley citizens.

Carole A. Freeman, a retired commander of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department who has lived in the Carson Valley for eight years, will be the speaker. Freeman has bachelor's and master's degrees in law enforcement leadership

There will be a brief business meeting prior to the program, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Learn area railroad history at fund-raiser

The past and future of Nevada's historic railroads takes center stage at "Rails Tales," the Historic Reno Preservation Society's annual fund-raising dinner Wednesday at the McKinley Art and Culture Center in Reno.

The evening begins with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7.

The program includes a photographic presentation illustrating changes along the Central Pacific from 1868 to 1997 by historian Larry Hersh.

Northern Nevada Railroad Commission Trustee Ted Short will give an update on the V&T Reconstruction Project.

The Old Melodeon Minstrels will provide entertainment, and the evening includes a silent auction.

Tickets are $50. McKinley Arts and Culture Center is at 925 Riverside Dr.
