Special Note: On Nov. 15, California closes most of its Sierra streams, creeks and rivers to 2005 fishing. Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April. All of the applicable, open waters in Inyo and Mono Counties will also close for 2005 on Nov. 15.
BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760-873-4484): Weatherman is calling for snow late this week.
Intake No. 2 and North Lake: Fishing was good at both lakes.
Power Bait was the King of baits.
South Lake: Anglers are starting to catch a few browns.
Big Rapalas and Cultivas have been best.
A lot of Brookies showing up back by the inlets.
Weir Pond: No report.
Bishop Creek: Tim Alpers stocked this week and the fishing for the weekend was fantastic.
Power Bait has been the best producer.
A 7-pound, 12-ounce Alpers Rainbow in the South Fork.
A stringer of 4 fish weighing 8-pounds, 2-ounces.
Backcountry: No report.
BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): "Beautiful weather in this part of the country, but not much fishing going on. We had a few people say that they were going into Blue Lakes but no one reported back to us.
Remember that the county will lock the gate on the road with the first major snowstorm.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Rick Giser of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707) (at 11 a.m.): Has been good out of a boat.
They are catching a few from shore at "The Bathtub."
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Jeffry Wenger of the Bridgeport Reservoir RV Park and Marina (888-377-1677): "This will be the last fishing report for this year.
As of Oct. 30th, the Reservoir produced many fine limits and good size trout.
The trolling finally got better as even a few Browns bit the hooks.
For those of you who still want to fish the Reservoir until closing on Nov. 15th, we will have the RV Park open as weather permits and you can launch your boats from here or on the dirt ramp towards the dam.
The East Walker channel just to the north of the marina was still stacked full of rainbows, and anywhere towards the North end was good.
Fishing with bait, trolling with lures or worms and the fly-fishing is staying consistent.
This past week, longer leaders (up to 3 feet) were the ticket using Power Bait or Nightcrawlers.
CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Doug Busey of Douglas County reported that the general store and boat ramp are closed, but may re-open for the weekend, dependent on the weather.
CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:
East Carson River: Brad Davis of the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229): Not much to report.
A fisherman caught a 5 pounder down by the "River Cabin" last week.
West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported beautiful weather, but not much fishing going on.
No one checked in with any reports of success.
Only sold one fishing license over the weekend.
CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: The Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260): These rainbows: A 4.68 pounder on orange Power Bait from the south shore, a 4.59 pounder on yellow cheese from the north shore, a 4.57 pounder on Power Eggs from the south shore and a 4.55 pounder on nightcrawlers from the south shore.
DAVIS LAKE, CALIF: Doug Ouellette at The Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks (358-6113) reported, "Davis Lake is still 'on fire.'
The fly fishermen are using Snails and Blood Midges from float tubes and boats at Freeman Creek and Jenkins on the west side of the lake. They are catching nice, solid 4 pounders. The fish are full of snails. Use a snail pattern with a floating line."
FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): A report of limits caught off points on east side of the lake.
Most were 16 inch rainbows. The people were trolling off the shelf on Turkey Point.
Bank fishing is doing well off the dam and near Lunker Point boat launch.
PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Carla Molino of the Pyramid Lake Store (775-476-0555) reported: "The fishing is getting better.
They are catching a few at "The Nets" and at the south end.
Catching some nice fish but nothing big.
Most boats are catching 6-12 fish per day, with some boats catching 20 a day.
We had a report of a boat catching 70 fish on the other side of the lake, but can't confirm it."
PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Doug Ouellette reported, "Boats are still doing real good.
They are trolling with Lyman lures or Sierra spoons between Pelican Point and Warrior Point.
Bring your fish in to be registered and photographed for a drawing at the end of the season for a fly fishing rod and reel combo worth more than $800."
SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448) reported:
Redding to Anderson: Water flows at 6,500 CFS.
Rainbow Trout:
Fly fishing is fair to good.
Catching and releasing nice rainbows, 2-4 pounds.
Catching a few Steelhead trout.
Using No. 14 or No. 16 Prince Nymph flies.
Micro May Fly patterns were working well.
Drifting Redding to Anderson.
King Salmon:
Is good in the Balls Ferry area.
Limits some days.
Catching huge Kings, up to 45 pounds, some larger.
Flatfish lures, wrapped with Sardine wrap, are best bet.
Watch for November and December to produce even bigger Kings.
Catching a few Steelhead trout now.
SILVER LAKE, CALIF: Mona at Kay's Silver Lake Resort (209-258-8598): "It's really quiet, up here.
We are going to be closed for one week to take some badly needed "R & R."
LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:
Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462): "The fishing has been very good on every trip.
We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning and tagging and releasing the smaller ones.
We're catching lots of fish, but nothing super big.
I am trolling the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures.
LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): "Agate Bay and Dollar Point have all been medium to excellent, early in the mornings.
We are trolling for Macks with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at depths of 160-300 feet, along the edges of the drop-offs.
The Macks are running 2-6 pounds."
LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good to excellent at Ski Run Mound, Ski Run Shelf and Camp Richardson.
We are trolling 150-300 feet deep with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.
Catching Macks, mostly 2-5 pounds.
The two big fish of the week were caught on Saturday by Teri Greer of Quincy, Calif.
She was trolling Herring Dodger flasher blades with a live minnow in 300 feet of water at Camp Richardson.
She caught a 10 pounder (31 inches) and a 17 pounder (35 inches) and completely outfished her husband Tim and two other fishermen.
The 17 pound Mack had 4 Kokanee salmon in it.
Jigging has also been effect at the Ski Run Shelf with a white squid jig tipped with a minnow."
LAKE TAHOE - East Shore:
Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good for rainbow planters at Cave Rock Landing, from boats with flasher blades and worms and from shore with worms.
TRUCKEE RIVER, NEV:
Truckee River: Doug Oullette reported that the browns are spawning all up and down the downtown Reno section, especially in the Rock Blvd. area.
TWIN LAKES, CALIF:
Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071): A 5 1/2 pound rainbow on a trolled gold Kastmaster lure and a 4 3/4 pound cutthroat on a nightcrawler.
A 2-pound, 10-ounce brown on a spoon for Gavin Miller of Gardnerville.
VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Rick Giser reported not much going except some action at Trumbull Lake.
WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Rick Giser reported:
East Walker: Is OK but not great.
Water flow is now at 37 CFS, the Winter flow level.
The fish are going to be in the pockets.
West Walker: Catching a few on the south side of the Town of Walker.
WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: "Great weather for us for this time of the year.
The fishing and the hunting have both been good.
They are catching trout, 2-4 pounds, mostly from shore, with worms or Power Bait.
Not too many boats at this time of the year.
In addition: Dennis Wickham of the Topaz Ranch Estates reported that he fished in the Owyhee River, downstream from the reservoir, and caught and released more than 100 fish in three days of fishing. He was using spinners and Super Duper lures.
