Camels return to compete on the Comstock

This weekend, I plan on hanging out in Virginia City at Bubba & Deke's, getting ready for the 46th annual Camel Races.

If you have never been to this event, check it out. It's like lawn mower racing - you have to see it to believe it.

Just watching the camel jockeys trying to hang on for dear life is well worth the drive up to the Comstock. The entire weekend is filled with camels, of course, but there's crafters, merchants, music and food as well.

In addition to helping get educational tools to students, Ron Wood Family Resource Center also promotes education and awareness for expecting and breastfeeding mothers.

Saturday, information and presenters are scheduled on La Leche League, MOMS Clinic/Carson-Tahoe Hospital and WIC.

What's great about the center is it really tries to help any way it can.

So if you know anyone who might benefit from this program, including dads, send them down! No eligibility is required to attend this event. Refreshments will be served.

The Salsa y Salsas! Festival is still looking for crafters and the best salsa maker in town. It comes with some bragging rights that you can enjoy all year long - if you win, that is.

My good friend Adolfo Segur got me hooked on this event presented by the Nevada Hispanic Services and Carson-Tahoe Hospital the very first year. Now it's huge.

The dancers, the colorful costumes, the music ... but most of all I love the salsa. The hotter, the better!

Enjoy the salsa-tasting contest with every type you can imagine: hot, mild, red, green. Bring the family, it's great food and family entertainment, plus admission is free

The new Clothes Closet and my very cool office are now at Pioneer High School.

I am really excited to be over here with the new principal Mark Vanvoorst. I think the late-Principal Charles Keller would have been very pleased with Mark taking his place and continuing to care for all the students. Vanvoorst is kind and caring, just like Charles.

Vanvoorst's door is always open for a great chat on education and goals for each and every student. So welcome to Principal Vanvoorst.

The students here are great, too, and have been really supportive in giving up their conference room to the new Clothes Closet to help other students.

I'll be asking later for some help in remodeling an area for Pioneer High students to give them back a room - so contractors, keep that in mind.

Carson City School District's Clothes Closet

Where: 202 E. Corbett St., Building 1, Room 5

What it has: Clothing, shoes, backpacks, school supplies and referral listings for medical, dental and food. This program covers children enrolled in the Carson City School District between ages 6-18. The Children in Transition Program is funded by local donations.
