Nominees sought for Governor's Arts Awards

The Nevada Arts Council and the Office of the Governor are seeking nominations for the 26th annual Governor's Arts Awards.

Initiated in 1979, these prestigious awards recognize outstanding and enduring contributions to Nevada through artistic achievement, commitment and service to the arts.

Nomination packets must be in the Carson City office of the Nevada Arts Council no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 18. Nominees and nominators must be current Nevada residents or organizations/businesses that work in and for the benefit of Nevada.

Up to a total of five awards will be given in the following categories:

• Excellence in the Arts: Artists and arts-producing organizations whose work has made a significant impact in their fields.

• Excellence in Folk Arts: Artists or groups carrying on a traditional art form within their cultural heritage.

• Service to the Arts, Organizations & Individuals: Organizations and individuals who have demonstrated a long-term innovative leadership resulting in significant contributions to the arts in Nevada.

• Service to the Arts, Businesses and Patrons: Businesses and patrons who have sustained and enhanced the arts in their community and/or the state through contribution of time, effort or financial resources.

• Arts and Education: Schools, individuals, organizations or businesses that have made significant contributions through leadership and creativity to advance arts education in Nevada's schools and communities.

Dine like one of the Silver Kings

An evening of fine dining and entertainment fit for the Silver Kings - Mackay, Flood, Fair and O'Brien. The Silver Kings made millions mining the Comstock Lode and left a legacy of mining history and silver fortunes.

The Fourth Ward School invites you to help leave a legacy through the Historic Fourth Ward School by attending the school's annual endowment dinner at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the school. Proceeds go toward the continued preservation of the award-winning, nationally significant 1876 school building and its programs.

Tickets are $50 and include wine, hors d'oeuvres, dinner catered by Cafe del Rio, a presentation to shock the Silver Kings and a commemorative glass.

Help troop by buying ticket for bear drop

Boy Scout Troop 495 is sponsoring its annual Teddy Bear Drop fund-raiser in conjunction with Old Town Days on Friday through Sunday at Heritage Park in downtown Gardnerville.

This year's Teddy Bear drop proceeds are being distributed to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, Boy Scout Troop 495 summer camp fund, and the Comstock Civil War re-enactors for their living history programs.

This year's theme is the "Blue and Grey Teddy Bear Drop" in recognition of Old Town Day's Civil War living history program and battle field re-enactments at Heritage Park.

Numbered teddy bears are purchased for $5 each, with all purchased bears being dropped from a hot air balloon to a target below.

The bear landing nearest the center of the target wins 10 percent of the total proceeds, up to $500.

The drop is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday. To purchase a Teddy Bear and a chance to win up to $500, call 783-8662.

Lyon GOP committee meeting Saturday

The Lyon County Republican Central Committee meets the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m.-noon.

The meeting will be Saturday in Yerington at the County Office Complex, 27 S. Main St.
