Taco feed, sundae bar to aid 4-H member

Jessica Poole, a Carson City 4-H member, has been chosen as one of a handful of 4-H youths in the United States to represent our country at the Canada National 4-H Conference this November in Ontario.

Members of the community can help Poole raise the funds she needs to attend the conference by enjoying an Indian Taco Feed and Sundae Bar from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 1 at the First United Methodist Church, 412 W. Musser St., Carson City.

The Canada conference is a five-day, agricultural-based event attended by selected 4-H members, ages 16-21, from across Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Clinton Henroid, a 4-H member from Nevada's White Pine County, was also chosen as a delegate. Jessica's mother, Michelle Powers, will accompany the two youths as a chaperone delegate.

CASA information night set for 6

CASA of Carson City will hold an information hour at 6 p.m. today at the Juvenile Court Building, 1545 E. Fifth St. CASA volunteers are appointed by Carson City's Juvenile Court to advocate on behalf of children removed from the home by child welfare due to abuse and neglect. Training is provided in the child welfare case legal process, child development issues, resources and child welfare law. CASA volunteers are asked to make a two-year commitment and there is a background check.

The Carson City Raiders Booster Club will meet at 10 a.m. Sunday at Q's, 230 Fairview Drive, for the Raiders vs. Eagles game.

Fire restrictions lifted on all federal lands

Seasonal Fire Restrictions declared on July 22 were lifted effective at one minute after midnight on Sept. 20.

The areas affected by the restrictions included all federal lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management's Winnemucca, Battle Mountain and Elko Field Offices and by the U.S. Forest Service Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest's Austin, Santa Rosa, Tonopah, Mountain City, Jarbidge, and Ruby Mountains Ranger Districts, US Fish & Wildlife Service Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge; by BIA Eastern Nevada Agency and Shoshone-Paiute Duck Valley Tribe; state and private lands within the Humboldt, Pershing, Lander, Eureka, Elko, Esmeralda and Nye County Fire Protection District and portions of Washoe, Lyon, Churchill, and White Pine counties.

"Even though fire restrictions have been lifted, federal and state land managers strongly urge all visitors to public lands and National Forest System lands to carry a shovel, one to five gallons of water, and a fire extinguisher," said Helen Hankins, BLM Elko Field Manager. "We're asking that people remain cautious with campfires and when driving in Nevada's backcountry."
