Domestic Violence Awareness Month begins

Mayor Marv Teixeira has proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and encourages all residents to participate in activities and programs working toward the elimination of domestic violence. Programs throughout the state are planning a number of activities commemorating Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence of Carson City is requesting individuals and all businesses and organizations to recognize the national epidemic of domestic violence and support the efforts of those attempting to educate the public and serve those affected.

"Acts of domestic violence are not confined to any group or groups of people, but cross all economic, racial and social barriers," often following that individual into the workplace, Teixeira said.

Employers are asked to initiate awareness programs and activities for their employees and the community at large. Suggestions of corporate activities and educational material and training are available by calling 883-7654.

Food distribution set

The USDA Commodity Food distribution will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday at the Carson City Community Center. This month's commodities will include apple juice, apple sauce, shelf milk, macaroni, creamed corn, canned potatoes, pears, beef stew and pinto beans.

Any needy family in the Carson City area can be eligible. The household must simply sign the Daily Issuance Sheet at the Community Center that day, certifying that their household's annual income does not exceed 150 percent of the poverty guidelines. Those income guidelines are currently $13,965 for a single person and $18,735 for a couple. No application or proof of income will be required, only a picture ID/driver's license. Food may be picked up for those unable to attend by bringing a signed note from them and their picture ID.

Judicial society minting fourth coin Friday

The public is invited to watch the minting of the Nevada Judicial Historical Society's fourth and final silver medallion commemorating historic sites of the Nevada Supreme Court at 2 p.m. Friday.

Designed by Carson City artist Ray Freeman, the obverse side of the medallion will bear the "CC" mintmark and depicts the Ormsby County Building, formerly Abraham Curry's Great Basin Hotel, which housed the court from statehood until 1871.

The building, on the corner of Musser and Carson streets, was replaced by the old Carson City Courthouse in 1920. The state seal of Nevada will be printed on the reverse side.

Each coin is 1 ounce minted .999 fine silver and mounted in a plastic case on a heavy descriptive card and enclosed in a protective envelope.

DAWG's Best Friend awards night coming

The Douglas Animal Welfare Group, DAWG, will honor recipients of the DAWG 2005 Best Friend Awards at the third Recognition Dinner Oct. 9. in the gazebo at David Walley's Resort on Foothill Road, Genoa. The no-host bar is at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m.. and awards at 8 p.m.

The honorees are Linda and Kevin Vukota, the animal rescue supports and owners of Critter Junction & Laundra Mutt in the Gottschalks Plaza and Guy Yeaman, the area's well-known professional dog trainer.
