Sparks approves franchise contract with Sierra Pacific

The Sparks City Council last week approved new franchise contracts with Sierra Pacific Power Company to provide electric and natural gas service.

The franchise fees paid by the utility will increase from 2 to 5 percent over a six year period and will be dedicated to Sparks roads, sidewalks and parks.

The current franchise 25-year agreements between Sierra Pacific and the city expire on April 25. The new agreement has a 10-year term with two additional options for five years.
