Weekly newspaper launched in south Reno neighborhoods

South Reno Weekly, a free-distribution newspaper delivered to homes in the Galena and Damonte Ranch neighborhoods, was launched this month by Silver State Publications LLC.

Jeff Trexler, who owns the publishing company with his wife, Amy, said the newspaper is delivered to 12,000 homes in the 89521 and 89511 Zip codes of south Reno.

Its content, he said, focuses exclusively on news of interest to south Reno school news, coverage of neighborhood events, profiles of south Reno residents and businesses.

The newspaper's revenues flow entirely from advertisers, and Trexler said the initial response has been strong.

"The small businesses have been good advertisers so far," he said. "We've had a ton of inquiries."

A staff of about 10 full- and part-time writers, editors, salespeople and designers produce the newspaper. It's printed by Eastern Sierra Publishing, a commercial printer in Carson City.

Trexler and his wife, graduates of the University of Nevada, Reno, returned to Reno after working in the real estate industry in the Sacramento area.

The publisher said he decided to launch South Reno Weekly after he saw the Reno area, unlike Sacramento, didn't have any neighborhood newspapers. The venture is self-funded by the Trexlers.

"Community newspapers are a nationwide trend and are very popular in other areas," Jeff Trexler said.
