Geothermal studies win federal grants

Mount Grant Hospital in Hawthorne won a $25,000 grant for a feasibility study and engineering assistance in replacing its fossil-fuel fired heating system with a geothermal heating system.

Initial estimates suggest the hospital could save as much as $100,000 per year in fuel costs, and the project could be the first step towards the development of a citywide heating district.

The grant was awarded through Geo-Powering the West, a program within the U.S.

Department of Energy, Chilton Engineering of Elko, meanwhile, received a $7,000 grant for engineering assistance to help create a geothermally heated industrial park to be located on the west edge of Elko.

The Oregon Institute of Technology's Geo-Heat Center at Klamath Falls will serve as the technical consultant on both projects.
