Truck school trains construction drivers

Horizon Commercial Truck School east of Sparks will teach seven-week classes to increase the number of women and minority-group members driving trucks in the construction industry.

The courses beginning this month are free to participants and supported by a $200,000 grant won by the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Thirteen spots will be available in each class. Students who complete the course will receive a commercial driver's license and class credit at Truckee Meadows Community College. They'll learn to drive vehicles ranging from dump trucks to snow plows.

Registration is handled by five state agencies JobConnect, JOIN, Career Enhancement Training, the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
