Reno nutraceutical firms merge

Crayhon Research Inc., a Reno-based developer of nutraceutical products, said last week it acquired Carbon Based Inc., a Reno medical-testing laboratory with a nationwide clientele.

Both companies are privately held, and terms of the acquisition weren't disclosed.

Crayhon will employ 24 people after the merger is completed. The merged companies will work from Crayhon's 6,000-square-foot facility at 5355 Capital Court in east Reno.

Michael Vierra, chief operating officer of Crayhon Research, said his company's aggressive growth plans were leading it into markets served by Carbon Based Inc.

Crayhon Research, launched in 2003 by nutritionist Robert Crayhon, specializes in natural nutrition products that mitigate problems with brain function that result from aging and other causes.

Carbon Based Inc., which began operations in 1996 under founder Mark A. Schauss, analyzes the results of medical tests conducted by traditional laboratories.

The company doesn't conduct tests itself. Instead, it takes the results of blood tests performed by traditional labs and generates an analysis of the patient's well-being. Its client base is largely composed of health-care practitioners.

"We see real synergy in joining forces," said Schauss, the president of Carbon Based Inc.
