EntrepreneurshipWeek seminars, expos, open houses set

Seminars, open houses at research and engineering institutions and expositions in Reno and Carson City are scheduled as part of EntrepreneurshipWeek USA.

The events are scheduled Feb. 24 through March 3.

The initial push for the event came from David Archer, managing director of Nevada's Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology. Other agencies ranging from the Small Business Administration to the University of Nevada, Reno, are participating, along with a host of private-sector companies.

In Reno, major events will include an all-day Entrepreneur Expo at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center on March 2.

Among the 18 speakers and panelists scheduled to appear are Tim Casey, director of the Institute of Innovation and Informatics at UNR. He'll provide a primer on financing a small business and will discuss steps in preparation of a business plan.

Others include Sheri and Jeff Elpern of Open Source Nevada, who will discuss business technology; Incline Village attorney Lara Pearson, who will review the steps to protect intellectual property; and Lynne and Jeff Sunderman of Sierra Capital Networks, who will review venture capital.

The Entrepreneur Expo is free.

On Feb. 28 in Carson City, the Northern Nevada Development Authority and Procurement Outreach Program of the state government will host an expo featuring organizations that provide services to entrepreneurs. It's set for the Plaza Hotel.

A lunch session $20 in advance, $30 at the door will feature presentations by Archer, Ron Weisinger of NNDA and Rich Horn of the Procurement Outreach Program.

Other events during the week will include:

* An all-seminar Feb. 24 on the fundamentals of starting a business sponsored by SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives. (For registration and details, see www.score-reno.org.)

* An open house at the University of Nevada, Reno, College of Engineering all day on Feb. 26. It's free.

* A kickoff event at 6 p.m. on Feb. 26 at Desert Research Institute. A $10 donation is requested.
