Construction management degree launched at college

Western Nevada College in Carson City will launch a four-year degree in construction management this fall.

"Businesses in Carson City said, 'We need construction managers,'" says Sean Sever, public information officer. "In this area, many of those already working are getting older and retiring."

The NVision economic development study specifically said Carson City needs a four-year school, he adds. So the college plans to add more four-year degree options. However, specifics have not been finalized.

Formerly Western Nevada Community College, the school offered two-year associate degrees.

"We work hand in hand with the companies in Carson City," says Sever. "It's not like we're the ivory tower college up on the hill."

Construction technology goes beyond hammer and nails, he adds. Project managers need a range of skills because they're accountable, or can be named in lawsuits if a project is not built correctly.

The first upper division courses at the Carson City campus environmental law and organizational behavior and interpersonal behavior are scheduled for fall semester. A dozen students are waiting to enroll, says Sever. Gene Martin is an instructor and program coordinator.

Students must be admitted into the bachelor of technology in construction management program in order to enroll in the upper division courses. To be accepted into the program, applicants must complete an associate of applied science degree in construction management. Construction work experience can also be considered.
