A venerable Washoe County business, Butcher Boy Meats, Deli and Catering, which opened its first store 34 years ago on Rock Boulevard in Sparks, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Reno.
Dallas Jolly started Butcher Boy at Rock Boulevard in 1974 after a predecessor market had operated in downtown Reno.
Jolly sold the store to his nephew, Ken, in 1995.
Ken Jolly added an expansive 17,000-square-foot location at South Virginia Street in late 2006 that the company billed as the largest meat, seafood, deli, specialty foods and catering facility in the Truckee Meadows.
The newly built two-story building with its custom wine cellar, dry-aged beef case, outdoor patio and barbeque area, and aisles of specialty foods contrasted sharply with the humble Sparks location.
In court documents the company listed assets and debts that each totaled more than $1 million dollars.
Butcher Boy's three largest creditors are Calvada Foods ($199,000), U.S. Foodservice ($185,000) and
American Express ($107,000).
The Sparks location employed about 12, while the south Reno operation employed roughly 20.
Company officials didn't respond to a request for further comment last week.
