Retailer to install wind system

JCPenney Co. has contracted with a Texas company to install wind turbines atop the retailer's distribution center in Stead to generate power.

When the installation is completed in November, JCPenney will purchase electricity produced by the turbines to power the 1.6-million-square-foot distribution center. (That's a building more than half again as large as the Meadowood Mall.)

The system will be installed by BroadStar Wind Systems of Dallas. The company says its wind turbines operate more efficiently than conventional propeller and fixed-blade turbines.

Financial details of the JCPenney installation weren't disclosed by privately held BroadStar. Three turbines, each able of producing at least 10 kilowatts, will be installed, a spokesman for the company said.

JCPenney said it will be closely monitoring the system as it makes decisions about use of wind and other renewable resources at other facilities.
