NCFU begins delayed membership push

More than a year after Las Vegas-based Nevada Federal Credit Union opened a branch in Sparks, it realized that it hadn't yet arrived red-carpet style.

"More than half of residents of Reno and Sparks don't know that they can join NFCU," says Greg Barnes, senior vice president for marketing. "In addition to billboards, we're advertising on television and on buses in and around our branch areas to increase eligibility awareness among residents."

The credit union established the Sparks branch after it received approval in 2002 to add certain underserved areas of Reno and Sparks to its field of membership.

But, says Barnes, "Because of a charter change down in the Las Vegas area a few years ago, our federal regulator required us to stop adding new Reno-area members for a few years. In essence we could not grow the Reno market. This allowed us to again serve Reno."
