EDAWN, 16 companies set to recruit Bay Area workers

The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada and 16 major employers from the region will launch an effort to recruit skilled professionals from the San Francisco Bay Area.

The companies and the economic development agency will host a recruitment event, "Beers and Careers with Reno/Tahoe," Thursday at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

The event targets Bay Area skilled professionals who are 30 or older and interested in a balanced lifestyle.

The pitch: The Reno-Tahoe area allows professionals to have a good career while enjoying affordable housing, outdoor recreation and easy commutes, said Gail Conkey, director of marketing for EDAWN.

Conkey said companies in northern Nevada continue to identify their need for quality, skilled workers as a priority. And the question comes up when companies look at northern Nevada as the possible location for new facilities.

"It's imperative we work as a region to address this issue in a creative and effective way," said Conkey.

The San Francisco Bay Area is one of eight metropolitan areas nationwide identified by a national workforce study as a potential source of workers for the Reno-Tahoe area.

Key figures from the study: Costs of living in the Bay Area are higher than in Reno, and a high percentage of professionals who were surveyed were open-minded about relocating to northern Nevada.

Six organizations are founding partners of the effort Reno/Tahoe companies looking to meet their recruitment needs joined the effort as founding partners including: International Game Technology,

Microsoft Licensing, GP, Renown Health, Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center, Twelve Horses and the University of Nevada Alumni Association.

Other companies participating in this week's recruitment event are AT&T, Charles River Laboratories, Dickson Realty, EE Technologies, Grant Thornton, Hire Dynamics, Mitel, Server Technology, Sierra Pacific Power Company and Sierra Nevada Corporation.
