Holiday Inn Express going up

Tom Metcalf started building hotels in Hawaii in the early 1980s, and that market niche still provides the lifeblood of Metcalf Builders.

The Carson City-based company recently began second-floor framing of a 98-room, 60,000-square-foot Holiday Inn Express near the corners of Market and Vassar streets in Reno.

Construction started in late December but was hampered by snow and mud, Metcalf says. The three-story hotel, owned by Malkiat and Jaswinder Dhami, who also own the Holiday Inn Express in Carson City, should be completed this fall.

Metcalf Builders is about to start construction of another Holiday Inn Express in the Palm Desert, Calif. The company also built the new 100-room, four-story Courtyard Carson City hotel by Marriot that opened last week at Casino Fandango. Metcalf built the Hampton Inn on the other end of Carson City as well.

In addition its extensive hotel work, Metcalf has contracts for a 14-acre shopping center in Minden and the next big phase of condos at the Sparks Marina.
