Nursery expands to Spanish Springs

Moana Nursery's recent opening of a third location at 7655 Pyramid Highway is the culmination of an eight-year search to find suitable property in the Spanish Springs market, President Bruce Gescheider says.

"The problem has always been that we were never able to find the right location with enough property to put nursery," he says. "With a nursery it's all about acreage, acreage, acreage. The combination just has been truly unaffordable until the downturn."

Moana Nursery secured a long-term lease for one acre at the former home of Wright Outdoor Center, which

folded. Gescheider plans to grow the nursery into a six-acre business over the next two years.

Gescheider was able to secure favorable lease terms with the landowner and will make substantial improvements to the site.

"It really has been an eight-year mission," he says. "There are just thousands of homesites to be developed out there, and while it will not happen as quickly as we want, it will happen over time.

"Our two stores both are basically in Reno, and now we can cover a much broader swath of the population."

General manager Jim Stanton will run the new store.
